Q. When setting up Bookmarks Manager, I get a message saying "General error: Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process". What does this mean?

A. This basically means that Favorites Manager cannot find the database file (favorites.mdb). Make sure that the database path, file name, and connect string are correct. The databaseDir and connStr variables in the common_functions.asp file specify the the database path, file name, and connect string. Also make sure to verify that the database file is actually in the path that your specify.

Q. When I load the default.asp file, I get a "HTTP 500 Internal server error" response.

A. More than likely, this is a typo or mistake in the database path, file name, and connect string. The databaseDir and connStr variables in the common_functions.asp file specify the the database path, file name, and connect string. Check to make sure these settings are correct.

Q. When I view the bookmarks, I get a message saying "Your session expired, please login again". What am I doing wrong?

A. Before viewing the bookmarks Web page (bookmarksmanager.html), you need a cookie that identifies you to Favorites Manager. Favorites Manager uses this cookie to retrieve your bookmarks from the database. You need to go to the default.asp page to set up a cookie for you. If you get this error after setting up a cookie on the default.asp page, make sure that cookies are enabled for you. Check not only your browser settings, but also the settings for your anti-virus and other software.

Q. When I view the bookmarks, I get a message saying "Error: Cannot update. Database or object is read-only".

A. This error usually indicates that the permissions are not set correctly. The user account for the IIS service should have "Write" permissions on the database file.
HOSTED WEB SITES: If your Web site is on a hosted server, see the support page for your hosting account. Many hosting accounts provide control panels that allow you to configure these permissions. But each hosting account is different. If you are having difficulty, call the support number for your hosting account and they will be able to help you set the permissions correctly.
LOCAL HOST: If you have your own Web server, use these instructions. Note that you cannot use the IIS console to change these permissions. The Access settings in the IIS console are not the same as "File Permissions". (The settings in the IIS console control the privileges for Web browsers and internet users. Whereas we need to configure the file permissions for the IIS user account.) To configure the file permissions, locate the favorites.mdb file, right-click on the file, choose "Properties", click on "Security", and modify the permissions for the account that the IIS web service uses. This is usually IIS_USR. If you don't know which user it is, you can always add the user "Everyone" and give it "Full Control".

Q. I'm getting an "Error: Microsoft VBScript compilation error ... Set regEx = New RegExp" message. What's wrong?

A. This is probably caused by an incompatible VBScript engine. Favorites Manager requires Visual Basic Scripting Edition version 5.5 or later.
HOSTED WEB SITES: If your Web site is on a hosted server, contact your hosting company to add support for VBscipt 5.5 to your account.
LOCAL HOST: If you have your own Web server, use these instructions. Note that your server will have a compatible version of VBscript if it has Internet Explorer 5.5 or later. For more products that include VBScript 5.5, see the version table information on the Microsoft Web site. Or, if you prefer, you can download VBScript itself from the MSDN Scripting Web site.

Q. I added a new favorite on my local filesystem and now the entire tree has disappeared.

A. Did the URL for the favorite you just added end with a backslash (\) character? If the last character in a URL is a backslash character (as may be the case with local filesystem URLs) then the script will be confused. Make sure the URL does not end with a backslash.

Q. How can I remove the Tree Menu Help link at the top of the tree?

A. We ship Favorites Manager with the free (unregistered) version of TreeView. The embedded version of TreeView is fully functional. The only difference between the free version and the registered version is the presence of this link. If you really want to remove this link, you need to purchase the registered version of TreeView from the TreeView Web site.

Q. Why don't you include a registered version of TreeView in Favorites Manager?

A. Many customers buy TreeView first and then Favorites Manager. If the price for Favorites Manager included a registered version of TreeView, then these customers would be paying twice for TreeView. Also, some Favorites Manager customers actually want to use the unregistered version of TreeView. So, to accommodate as many customers as possible, we ship Favorites Manager with the free (unregistered) version of TreeView.

Q. I work for a company whose legal team requires different licensing terms. Is it possible to obtain alternative licensing terms?

A. Sure. Please contact us and we will try to figure out terms that suit both parties.
